Alaska on Celebrity Solstice: Why This Cruise Completely Changed My Mind About Alaska
4:24

For years, I thought Alaska cruises were something you did later in life. Then I sailed aboard the Celebrity Solstice and immediately understood why people return to Alaska again and again.

This 7-night roundtrip sailing from Vancouver delivered everything I hoped for: incredible scenery, wildlife, glacier viewing, fresh seafood, and surprisingly relaxing luxury onboard.

My Celebrity Alaska Cruise Itinerary

Our sailing included:

    • Vancouver
    • Icy Strait Point
    • Hubbard Glacier
    • Juneau
    • Ketchikan
    • Two scenic sea days

One thing I always recommend: arrive at least one day early before your cruise. We spent time exploring Vancouver before embarkation and loved the energy, restaurants, and waterfront atmosphere.

Is Celebrity Solstice a Good Ship for Alaska?

Absolutely.

While some travelers describe Celebrity Solstice as a more classic ship, I found it elegant, comfortable, and exceptionally well-maintained. The service throughout the week was outstanding.

We stayed in Prime AquaClass staterooms, which gave us access to Blu, Celebrity’s private restaurant for AquaClass guests. Between the quieter dining experience, healthier menu options, spa access, and upgraded service, AquaClass felt well worth it for Alaska.

One unexpected highlight? Our balcony. Watching Alaska’s scenery drift by from bed with the balcony door cracked open became one of my favorite parts of the trip.

The Moment That Made the Entire Cruise

Nothing prepared me for Hubbard Glacier.

As the ship slowly approached the glacier, the entire deck fell quiet. Then the calving started, massive chunks of ice breaking away and crashing into the sea. It was one of the most unforgettable travel moments I’ve ever experienced.

Pro tip for Alaska cruises: dress in layers. Temperatures changed constantly throughout the day, especially near the glacier.

What Are the Best Alaska Shore Excursions?

Rainforest E-Bike Adventure in Juneau

This ended up being one of my favorite excursions of the trip.

We booked through a local operator and explored rainforest trails, glacier viewpoints, and some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. The electric bikes made it easy for all fitness levels.

Crab Feast in Ketchikan

If you love seafood, do this.

We learned about Dungeness crab harvesting before heading to a traditional Alaskan crab feast complete with crab legs, cheesecake, and blueberry topping.

Wildlife Tour at Icy Strait Point

This excursion delivered incredible scenery and a true wilderness feel. Even though bear sightings are never guaranteed, the landscapes alone made the experience worthwhile.

From glacier viewing to wildlife encounters, Alaska is a cruise destination unlike any other. Explore upcoming Celebrity Cruises Alaska itineraries, specials, and FAQs, and start planning your own adventure.

Celebrity Cruise Dining Highlights

The food on board genuinely surprised me.

Our favorite specialty restaurants were:

    • Murano
    • Tuscan Grill

Murano’s tableside lobster preparation was one of the best meals of the trip.

The Oceanview Café buffet was also far better than expected, especially for breakfast and lunch on sea days.

What do you pack for an Alaskan cruise?

A few things I was very glad I packed:

    • Waterproof layers
    • Hat and gloves
    • Sunscreen
    • Magnetic cabin hooks
    • Portable power strip

Even in July, Alaska weather can shift quickly throughout the day.

Final Thoughts: Is an Alaska Cruise Worth It?

Without question.

This trip completely changed my perception of Alaska cruising. Between the glaciers, wildlife, fresh air, scenic sailing, and relaxed luxury onboard, it became one of the most memorable vacations we’ve ever taken. And now I understand why so many travelers go back more than once.

If Alaska has been sitting on your someday list, move it up.
